We have had a number of enquiries for Low Noise Fets as used in the Phono Stages of both FVP and various versions of RTP preamps. These Fets can sometimes be difficult to source and match.

Especially in the case of the RTP these Fets need to be very carefully matched as quad sets. In the FVP they also need to be matched as pairs, so that Left and Right channels have identical performances. In the future these Fets are also used in some Tube Power Amps, designs that will be featured in the up-coming Tube Power Amp CookBook.

Matching these Fets creates a few problems: You will need a large supply of Fets to get matched pairs (FVP) and matched quads (RTP and Power Amps). Also the matching technique is critical. A constant temperature environment is required (air conditioned 20 degrees centigrade) and the Fets must not be handled by hands immediately before matching (the temperature will rise with skin contact and give erroneous readings).

Three FETs are suitable, all made by Toshiba, 2SK-147, 2SK-369 and 2SK-170 - see Data Sheets below. These are graded as GR (Green) BL (Blue) and V (Violet). The GR grade can be used if nothing else is available, BL is recommended and so is V but much more difficult to source.

We have secured a large supply of 2SK-369BL Fets. These are identical to 2SK-147 except use the smaller TO-92 package and thus rated at 400mW dissipation compared to 2SK-147's usual 600mW, due to the latter's larger package. This in practice is not important. Again, let me stress that that they are identical in every other case i.e. the 2SK-369BL isn't just an equivalent that you look up in a substitution book, internally it is the same Fet as 2SK-147BL. These 2SK-369BL Fets are carefully measured under temperature controlled conditions to better than - +2% tolerances when matched to other Fets. Using a 'handless' method we can accurately match both pairs and quads.
